In 1981 UNCTAD received a request from the secretariat of the Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) to assist in the compilation of foreign trade statistics in their member States. This involved Customs clearance offices, and the modernization of Customs clearance procedures, to achieve quality results.

ASYCUDA Programme Strategic Plan - 2011-2015
The ASYCUDA Programme provides technical assistance to Member States for managing international trade and transport operations in a modern automated environment. The strategic goals of the ASYCUDA Programme endeavour to leverage innovative capacities to respond to demands from members and partners and to ensure long term sustainability of the Programme.
